The Blackamoor Statue

The Blackamoor Statue is one of only eleven, 18th Century statues which reflects the cultural and political history of the slave trade, and is now the centre piece in the newly restored Victorian Conservatory at Wentworth Castle.
The statue itself was restored 3 years ago and has been stored at Cannon Hall while the restoration work to the conservatory was complete.
Britannia Appleyards, were proud to be entrusted with moving the statue from its storage location at Cannon Hall, to its display location within the Conservatory at Wentworth Castle.
Obviously this was far from straight forward, as beneath Cannon Hall, lies a maze of dark, narrow passageways with cobbled floors leading to various locked rooms, one of which held the secret storage location of the Blackamoor Statue.
A six man team was used to fully export wrap the cast lead statue, and then secured it to a set of wheels. Plywood sheets were used to cover the cobbled floors to allow easy access through the passageways and eventually outside to the waiting lorry.
The statue was then securely fastened down ready for its short 20 minute journey to Wentworth Castle.
Upon arriving at Wentworth Castle we found our access up to where the Conservatory was located was blocked due to parked cars, and so it was decided that the only option was to unload from there, and wheel the statue up the long driveway that led to the conservatory.
Once inside, the statue was lifted onto its pedestal where it was then fully unwrapped and the sundial was re-attached ready for the grand opening.
