When it was decided that Sheffield Cathedral was to have a major revamp, they naturally needed the building to be emptied of all precious items furniture and effects.
Britannia Appleyards were asked if we would like to be the company that performed this complicated move.
We said yes!
This was obviously no ordinary removal though and needed plenty of planning. Every item of furniture would be needed to be fully wrapped in our laminated bubble wrap before it could be moved. This included the Bishops Throne, Pews, Pulpit, Granite Font and a priceless 15th Century Screen that measured 21ft long and 10ft high. The smaller items were safely packed in to boxes by our trained staff
Once the wrapping and packing was completed everything would need to be transported out of the Cathedral and into our Rotherham storage facility. Easier said than done with the Font alone weighing over a tonne!
The move was eventually completed over a 5 day period with 8 of our staff, except for when it was time to move the 15th Century Screen, a mammoth task which needed 14 people alone.
