Best Packing Methods for Moving Home
Where to start?
It takes a lot longer to pack than you might imagine. Be organised and start packing early.
*Start packing in the room you are least likely to use
*Use this room to store the boxes that you have packed. If possible have one storage room upstairs and one down stairs. If this is not possible we offer a self storage service where you can put goods straight into your own storage unit to help you free up some space.
The storage units are located under cover and cars or vans can be parked for unloading within two feet of the unit.
The units can also be loaded on our trucks so we can bring them out of store on the day of your move.
*The first boxes are the hardest to pack, but it is best to pack items from around the floor area first and work your way up.
Boxes can be made up and packed resting on top of others to save any unnecessary bending down.
*Use strong boxes or plastic crates
*Try not to wrap things in newspaper, the print comes off and makes things dirty.
*Heavy items like books photo albums and tools should go in smaller boxes generally known as a PK6 (2 cubic feet).
*Ornaments, games and pictures can be packed in slightly bigger boxes the PK2 size (4 cubic feet)
*Bedding towels and light items can be packed in PK3’s (6 Cubic feet)
*If you have space in cupboards or drawers you can save a lot of volume by filling these with soft items.
Clothes can also stay in drawers.
This will save you money if you are going to put your items in store.
*Wardrobe cartons take up a lot of room and unless you need to dismantle a wardrobe in advance these are best supplied on the day of your move.
*Large pictures should be left in situ until the removal men need them.
*China is time consuming and is usually best left to the removal men for Insurance purposes.
*Boxes are best packed full a bit like holiday suitcases so they can be stacked on top of each other without them crushing.
*If you pack any liquids please mark them clearly.
*It is considered good practice to tape the boxes on the top and bottom and label the room they came from and where they are going if possible.
*Keep a separate box or two with essentials in just in case you need them
:-Phone books, paperwork food and drink bedding and clothes, maybe even a passport.
*Garden tools are best taped together in small bundles
